James Cameron’s opposition to California’s Proposition 23, a bill that would suspend the state’s landmark law combating climate change, has caused its supporters to label him a hypocrite. The Titanic and Avatar director donated $1million of his own money to opponents of the Proposition. In response to the donation, a short video was released by its supporters that attacked Cameron’s numerous properties and gas guzzling vehicles. In total, according to the video, the homes have 24,000 square foot of living space along with heated swimming pools, a 100 acre ranch in Santa Barbara, a helicopter, a fleet of submarines, a collection of dirt-bikes, and numerous other cars and motor-bikes. The film finished with the words: “And yet he demands WE live with less? James Cameron: HYPOCRITE.” Although the production completely fails to mention that James Cameron offsets all his emissions, that has not stopped it being a hit on the internet 120,000 views on Youtube. Other hollywood opponents to the Proposition include Arnold Schwarzenegger (who introduced the law), David Arquette and Benjamin Bratt. The details of the Proposition are that AB23, the tough greenhouse gas reduction law, will be suspended until unemployment dips below 5.5% for four consecutive quarters, which is effectively impossible. Slightly ironically, the Proposition is being financed by Tesoro and Valero, two oil companies based in Texas.
